Mesothelioma is a cancer of the mesothelium, which is a series of thin linings with mesothelial cells. It usually forms near the lungs or abdomen when mesothelial cells become damaged. Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos, and the cancer takes 15-50 years after exposure to fully form.
About this Cancer
- According to the Canadian Cancer Society, the most recent statistics for mesothelioma only date from 2019 and 2022. They show that the cancer mostly affects people assigned male at birth.
- Incidence statistics from 2019 state that 460 Canadians were diagnosed with mesothelioma, of which 77% were men and 23% were women.
- The most recent mortality statistics from 2022 confirm that 472 Canadians died from mesothelioma (80% men and 20% women).

Symptoms vary based on where the mesothelioma originates, for ex: the lining of the lungs or abdomen.
Pleural mesothelioma (impacts the tissues around the lungs). Symptoms can include:
- Chest discomfort
- Shortness of breath
- Fatigue
- mass under the skin on the chest area
- Painful cough
- Unexplained weight loss
Peritoneal mesothelioma (impacts tissue in the abdomen). Symptoms can include
- Abdominal pain or swelling
- Nausea
- Fatigue
- Unexplained weight loss

Risk factors for mesothelioma include:
- Asbestos (mineral fiber that occurs naturally. Individuals at risk for coming into contact with asbestos while working include mine workers, construction workers, firefighters, electricians etc.)
- Erionite
- Fluoro-edenite fibrous amphibole
- Ionizing radiation
- BAP1 gene mutation
