Provincial Drug Programs:  You may be eligible for coverage or cost assistance of approved medications and supplies if you meet the financial criteria or if you have a medical condition identified in one of the provincial drug programs.

Disability/Illness related supports

AccessAbility Supports | Government of Prince Edward Island: This program provides support to Islanders living with disabilities. For certain individuals, living with chronic cancer may be debilitating and interfere with their ability to work, attend school or participate in other activities of daily living. Help is available under five areas of support, including personal support, housing support, community supports, caregiver support, and financial support.

Food Banks and Food Delivery

PEI Food Bank:  The Upper Room Food bank operates both as a food bank and soup kitchen, as well as an association for other Food Banks across Prince Edward Island. The Upper Room’s food bank offers food pick up on Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays from 9:00am-12:00pm. For more information, click here. To find food banks across the island, click here.

Meals on Wheels: Meals on Wheels PEI is a collaborative leader for the delivery of nutritious, affordable meals, to persons in need, to facilitate the promotion of their health and wellness. For information about Meals on Wheels near you: click here. Meals on wheels PEI also offers rural routes.

Income supports

Social Assistance Program:  Social assistance will help you pay for basic necessities like food, clothing, and shelter when you do not have enough money. Depending on your financial situation, you may also receive payment for childcare, medicine, and other living essentials. If you are a PEI resident age 18 years or older and your income cannot cover the basic costs of living, you can call the social assistance screening line toll free at 1-877-569-0546

Seniors Independence Initiative | Government of Prince Edward Island: The Seniors Independence initiative provides financial support for practical services that make it easier for seniors to remain in their own homes and their own communities. This initiative offers help for services like light housekeeping, meal preparation, transportation, medical alert system, grass cutting etc. This program complements support provided to seniors by family members/friends and other governmental programs. Applicants who are eligible can access up to $1,800 depending on income.

Medical Equipment

PEI Breast Prosthesis Program: Women who have had breast surgery can get their first prosthetic and adapted bra free of charge (valued approximately at $400 value) from the PEI Breast Prosthesis Program by contacting Eileen Moore, mastectomy prosthesis consultant at 902-892-4556. Post mastectomy surgery patients can meet at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) to have a fitting six weeks after surgery.

Canadian Red Cross Health Equipment Loan Program: The Canadian Red Cross Health Equipment Loan Program (HELP), provides health equipment to individuals recovering from illness or injury. Healthcare professionals refer clients to the Canadian Red Cross and health equipment is selected to meet the needs of the individual. This program operates in a few provinces, including Prince Edward Island. For more information, click here.

Dreams Come True Free Wig Program: Charlottetown hair salon Dreams Come True provides free wigs to cancer patients who cannot afford to buy their own. Contact Carla Wilson-Mackinnon at 902-940-0790 for more information.

Canadian Cancer Society Wigs and Breast Prostheses services: All Canadians, no matter where they live, can access free wigs and breast accessories with just a simple call or click. For ordering a wig online, you will need to fill out a form identifying your wig preferences.

Transportation assistance

Medical Travel Information for People with Cancer | Government of Prince Edward Island: If you have cancer and require a medical test or procedure not available on PEI, your doctor will refer you to a specialist or a service in another province. By visiting the linked page, you will be able to find information about this process, particularly, frequently asked questions. For additional questions, contact the cancer patient navigator.

Transportation | Canadian Cancer Society: Our travel treatment fund provides short-term financial support to reduce some travel costs when traveling to cancer treatments. This includes costs like fuel and taxi or public transit fares. It is available to people living in Canada who are currently or will soon be undergoing cancer treatment.

Disability Supports

AccessAbility Supports: Supports that focus on empowering individuals living with disabilities to access the tools they need to reach their full potential and contribute to society as fully as possible. The program offers support under 5 areas, including personal, housing, community, caregiver, and financial supports.

  • Financial supports: Financial supports help with basic living expenses, if needed, and may include: assistance for basic needs like food, clothing, shelter, household, and personal supplies through what is called Assured Income.

Cancer Patient Navigation Program: The PEI cancer patient navigator is available to assist you and your family at any point on your cancer journey. The cancer patient navigator can, among other things, help connect you to resources that may be able to assist with financial needs and expenses for medications, travel or medical supplies.
