Health related supports
Newfoundland and Labrador Prescription Drug Program (NLPDP): The Newfoundland and Labrador Prescription Drug Program (NLPDP) provides financial assistance for the purchase of eligible prescription medications for those who reside in the province. There are five main plans under the program: The Foundation Plan, The 65Plus Plan, The Access Plan, The Assurance Plan and The Select Needs Plan.
Foundation-based assistance
Cancer Care Foundation – Newfoundland and Labrador: The Newfoundland and Labrador’s Cancer Care Foundation’s Patient and Family Support Fund works to offer direct financial support to eligible cancer patients, in order to assist with added expenses. This support allows patients to focus on their treatment.
Transportation assistance
Air Daffodil – Labrador, Newfoundland | Community Service Locator: The Air Daffodil Program is provided by generous donors for people in Labrador, living with Cancer who have to travel for a cancer related appointment. This program provides three return flights, per client, per fiscal year that can be split between the client and an escort if needed. For more information, consult the hyperlinked website.
Medical transportation Assistance Program: Patients that are required to travel for Specialized Insured Medical Services unavailable in their area of residence may be eligible to receive financial assistance through Medical Transportation Assistance Program (MTAP). Wheels of Hope – Volunteer Driving Program | Community Service Locator:The Canadian Cancer Society’s Wheels of Hope Transportation Program provides people living with cancer rides to and from their cancer treatment appointments, with the help of dedicated volunteer drivers. There is an annual registration fee for new patients; however, patients under the age of 18 are exempt.
Food Banks
Community Food Sharing Association: Community Food Sharing Association is the pivotal agency for food distribution to the hungry in Newfoundland and Labrador. To find food, use this link.
Income Supports
Income Support Benefits in Newfoundland and Labrador include basic and non basic financial supports.
Basic Benefits:
- Family and individual benefit (to assist with expenses such as food, clothing, personal care, household maintenance and utilities)
- Shelter (including rent and mortgage)
Non-Basic Benefits (eligibility may vary according to your personal circumstances)
- Municipal tax payments
- Eye exams and prescription glasses
- Private childcare (related to employment or training)
- Expenses for burials
To qualify for income support, a person must be 18 years of age; be a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador; submit an application for benefits; be determined eligible according to a financial assessment. For more information, click here.
Disability Supports
The Newfoundland and Labrador Disability Benefit: The Newfoundland and Labrador Disability Benefit includes up to $400 per month to those who qualify ($4,800 annually), beginning in July 2025. The monthly amount is available for Persons with Disabilities between the ages of 18-64 who qualify for the Government of Canada’s Disability Tax Credit (DTC). For more information, click here.
Medical Equipment
Special Assistance Program – Medical Equipment and Supplies: The Special Assistance Program is a provincial program which provides basic medical supplies and equipment to assist with activities of daily living for individuals living in the community who meet the eligibility criteria for the program. Benefits of the program include:
- Medical supplies (including dressings, catheters and incontinent supplies)
- Oxygen and related equipment and supplies
- Orthotics such a braces and burn garments
- Equipment such as wheelchairs, commodes or walkers
Please be advised that at this time we are not aware of any programs offered by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador that provide coverage for breast prostheses or mastectomy products (Canada’s Online Mastectomy Shop).
Pediatric Resources
Dr. Jack Hand Legacy Foundation: Funds raised go towards helping families with financial support for medical expenses like travel costs, hospital costs, medical practitioner costs and prohibitively expensive prescription drugs. They will also help to cover food costs, accommodations, and travel required for treatment.
Fuel the Care: This program provides fuel gift cards to families traveling to receive medical care for their child. Families can apply by contacting the social work departments at partner hospitals.
