Nunavut non-insured health benefits program – The Extended Health Benefits Full Coverage Plan covers those enrolled in the Nunavut Health Care Plan and have a chronic illness or disease; this list approved prescription drugs.
Financial assistance
Income Assistance Program: The Income Assistance Program is a last resort meant to help Nunavut families and individuals meet their basic needs when for various reasons, including disability, illness, low-income or periods of unemployment, they are unable to provide for themselves. You are able to apply if you are 18 years of age and older and in financial need living in Nunavut. To apply, contact your income assistance worker to set up an appointment.
Food Banks
Nunavut Food Bank: Niqinik Nuatsivik Nunavut Food Bank (NNNFB) was established in 2001 as a Nunavut-based non profit organization to help reduce hunger in Iqaluit and Nunavut. 98% of all funding is used to purchase food for our clients. Food bank distribution is every second Saturday morning.
Transportation supports
All Nunavut residents who have exhausted their third-party insurance or have no medical travel benefits, including Health Canada’s Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) may be eligible for the Extended Health Benefits (EHB) for Medical Travel Support. EHB Medical Travel Support may provide coverage for client and client escort expenses such as:
- Flight co-payment specified under the Medical Travel Policy
- Taxi fare or ground transportation between person’s accommodation, health facilities and the airport
- Ambulatory charges for transferring the client from one facility to another
- Stay in private or commercial accommodations
- Meals for stay in private accommodations
- Long-term care plan, indicated prior to or after start of medical trip

Prosthetics Support
The Prosthetics and Orthotics Department (P&O) serves children and youth from Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario and Nunavut who are in need of prosthetic and orthotic devices. Children and youth up to the age of 21 from Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario, and Nunavut may be referred for services from the prosthetics and Orthotics Department. New clients may be referred by parents or guardians or by a number of medical professionals. This program is funded by WRHA, Manitoba Health and the Rehabilitation Centre for Children.
Senior Fuel Subsidy (SFS) | Government of Nunavut: The Senior Fuel Subsidy is a program that helps to offset the high cost of heating fuel for seniors who own and live in their homes.
Eligible homeowners are reimbursed for the cost of heating fuel, up to 3,500 liters. An income assessment is done to establish whether the net income of the applicant or applicants is within the program limits.
