G7 Leaders Commit to Accelerate Cancer Care

The Group of Seven (G7), of which Canada is a member, has recommitted itself to the eradication of cancer.

The statement from Evian, France, where the group is meeting, reads, “We, the Leaders of the G7, reaffirm our commitment to accelerate the fight against cancer. Partner countries of the G7, Brazil, Egypt, India, Kenya, and the Republic of Korea, also support this call on the fight against cancer.”

The statement goes on to say the group is “Determined to deepen international scientific cooperation, close persistent gaps in prevention and early detection, and ensure that progress in oncology reaches every patient. While acknowledging our existing financing efforts and the shared global responsibility, where we have taken a leadership role, we commit to strengthening our endeavours to advance cancer research and development.”

The G7 consists of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, and comprise nearly 50 per cent of worldwide net wealth. The European Union is also part of group as a “non-enumerated member”.
