Karen J. Wiederkehr Memorial Fund: Yukoners recently diagnosed with breast cancer receiving chemotherapy at Whitehorse General Hospital or who need to travel outside of Yukon for care may be eligible for financial support through the Karen J. Wiederkehr Memorial Fund, which helps provide support to women experiencing financial pressures while going through treatment. Click here to learn more about the fund and how to apply.

Yukoners’ Cancer Care Fund: Financial support may be available through the Yukoners’ Cancer Care Fund, which assists Yukon residents dealing with cancer, and their family members who act as caretakers, cover some of the significant out of pocket expenses that can be sustained during cancer treatment. Cancer Care Coordinator | Yukon Hospital Corporation: The Cancer Care Coordinator is a hospital staff member who provides a zero cost service for cancer patients and their families by collaborating closely with the patient’s healthcare team. Patients can get in touch with the coordinator directly at 867-393-8853 or by emailing cancercare@wgh.yk.ca. They can help patients and families with many things, such as accessing support services, like financial assistance, counselling and home care and they can help with understanding medical travel benefits/coverage.

Food Bank Society of the Yukon: The Food Bank Society of the Yukon is a community-based organization committed to providing emergency food to persons and families in need. 

You can pick up food at their location on 306 Alexander Street in Whitehorse during pick-up times. You can also sign up to receive a hamper in one of the communities they serve, by getting in touch with the Community Operations Manager at com@yukonfoodbank.ca

The Chronic Disease and Disability Benefits Program can provide support and assist with some costs of chronic disease or disability. You may be able to receive some help with costs for: 

• Prescription drugs
• Medical surgical supplies
• Medical equipment
• Food supplements and
• Prostheses 

You can receive assistance with these costs if these are items that help you manage your chronic disease or disability; and they are advised by your healthcare provider. Your doctor needs to apply to the program for you, and they should submit an application prior to you making a purchase.

Through this program, you can also receive assistance with costs for prosthetic garments. Please note that if you have existing health benefit coverage through your employer or a private or group insurance agency, you are required to submit claims to those insurers first. Also, if you can borrow equipment from other places like a hospital or the Canadian red cross, the expenses of your medical equipment cannot be covered.

Yukon Social Assistance provides financial help to people who have insufficient money to live on. It helps cover the costs of basic needs. This program is a last resort after you’ve exhausted all other possible sources of income. If you receive social assistance, you cannot leave the territory. The only exception is for medical travel that’s approved for up to 6 months. 

Medical Travel with Yukon Insured Health: A simple guide: The Medical Travel Program supports Yukon residents who have to leave their home community to receive medical care. The program covers flights and ground transportation from your home community to the closest suitable health care facility. Applications for medical travel must be validated by a Yukon doctor or community health nurse and approved by the program prior to any travel arrangements. To obtain this subsidy, you must have a Medical Travel Subsidy form signed by a health care provider present at all of your appointments while you are on medical travel. Once you return home, submit the signed form to the Medical Travel Program to receive payment. You should get a cheque within 30 days. For more information, including about escorts, click here.

They create a personalized care plan for every child and family in their program in order to meet their needs. This program stays with children and families from diagnosis to illness, death and beyond.

There is zero cost to families to use Canuck Place programs and services.
