Associate Cancer Centres deliver a range of treatments and care options to cancer patients in their home communities, including outpatient chemotherapy, education and support for cancer patients. They see new patients as well as follow-up patients and can refer patients to a Community Cancer Centre should this be closer to their home community.

The goal is to provide the same quality of cancer care and support to patients in their home communities as they would receive at the Cross Cancer Institute or Tom Baker Cancer Centre.

Manitoba

CancerCare Manitoba offers treatment for patients in the province. Their goal is that patients live successfully, comfortably and happily despite their diagnosis. They achieve this goal with teams of dedicated nurses, physicians, therapists, social workers, psychologists, scientists, volunteers, support workers, technologists and more.

To make care closer to home possible, CancerCare Manitoba partners with Regional Health Authorities to create community care centres. This ensures that patients who are in need of care do not have to spend their time in treatment travelling to and from appointments.

Nunavut

The Nunavut government pays for its citizens to stay at Larga Baffin, where key staff members speak Inuktitut, serve traditional foods and help with things like ordering prescriptions. Patients can bring an escort to help them navigate the language, culture and health system; lodging, meals and transport to and from appointments are covered.

Larga Baffin is a full service boarding home for residents of the Qikiqtani Region of Nunavut based in Ottawa. Larga Baffin is one of the boarding homes that is funded by the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB) of the Canadian Government.

If you are eligible to stay at Larga House Baffin, they will provide you with meals and accommodation for the length of your stay in Ottawa, unless you are an inpatient at the hospital.

You will have your own bed but you might have to share a room with either your escort or another patient of the same gender.

Staff will drive you to your appointments and back to the airport when the time comes to leave. They will also arrange for your flight home.

If Larga House Baffin is full, they will arrange for your stay in a hotel and they will pick you up and bring you to the boarding home for meals. They will drive you to your appointments, the same as if you were staying at Larga House Baffin.
