Jackie Manthorne, CCSN president & CEO, paid a visit to Queen’s Park in late May to meet with several MPPs and other decision-makers to discuss issues related to cancer survivorship. While there, she met with:
- Andrea Horwath, leader of the Ontario New Democratic Party.
- Holly Burke, Senior Policy Analyst in the office of Dr. Eric Hoskins, Ontario Minister of Health and Long-Term Care.
- MPP John Fraser, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Health and Long-term Care.
- France Gélinas, Health and Long-term Care critic for the Ontario New Democratic Party.
On a previous visit to Queen’s Park, Manthorne met with Jeff Yurek, Health and Long-term Care critic for the Conservative Party.
CCSN’s message during these meetings was to think of cancer as a chronic disease rather than as an event, one that must be approached with a life-long attitude, from prevention to detection to treatment to survivorship, and to understand what cancer patient go through, including:
- Fear of cancer spreading or coming back.
- Physical side effects of treatment and surgery.
- Psychosocial and mental health issues.
- Changing family dynamics.
- Difficulty transitioning back to work.
- Financial impact.
