The Hereditary Cancer Program has established eligibility criteria in British Columbia for patients who are interested in genetic testing. The process starts a discussion about the patient’s medical history with their physician or medical professional. If the patient is eligible, they are referred for genetic counselling. The patient and the genetic counsellor then decide if genetic testing is wanted and necessary.
