Prince Edward Island

Cancers can be expensive to treat and manage. In a literature review conducted by the Canadian Cancer Society in 2010, findings found that most of the costs incurred by patients and their families were traced back to travelling expenses, out-of-pocket costs, and cancer drugs and prescription medicines. This section is meant to provide financial aid and resources specific to cancer patients and their families residing in Prince Edward Island.

Canadian cancer society

Through their Cancer Patient Advocate Program, the Canadian Cancer Society PEI Division focuses on understanding an individual’s needs to determine how best we can support them on their cancer journey. Staff and volunteers:

  • provide information on resources available to people with cancer and their families
  • empower you to advocate for the services and support you need
  • advocate on your behalf, if required in some cases, provide funding support for cancer-related medical supplies or travel to cancer treatments for those who live more than 20 km from their treatment centre

The staff and volunteers of the Cancer Patient Advocate Program will talk with you, learn about your immediate needs and any barriers you are encountering, help connect you with the appropriate resources and make a plan to resolve any problems. Recognizing that your situation and needs may change, program staff and volunteers can be part of your cancer journey, planning regular contact with you, as appropriate.
