Alberta has two main cancer centres which act as the authorities on cancer care. The cancer centres offer inpatient and outpatient services to cancer patients. This care extends to support education on nutrition, a series on living with cancer and even working with female patients to help empower them. They train physicians, nurses and pharmacists to be certified, and then these professionals will move on to work in the associate cancer centres.
These centres are especially known worldwide for the work they have done in cancer research. Funded by the Alberta Cancer Foundation, both centres perform cancer research to effectively advancing technology and care. In 2011, the Cross Cancer Institute invented new medical technology which can more effectively treat people with abdominal cancer.

Associate Cancer Centres
Associate Cancer Centres deliver a range of treatments and care options to cancer patients in their home communities, including outpatient chemotherapy, education and support for cancer patients. They see new patients as well as follow-up patients and can refer patients to a Community Cancer Centre should this be closer to their home community.
The goal is to provide the same quality of cancer care and support to patients in their home communities as they would receive at the Cross Cancer Institute or Tom Baker Cancer Centre.
