Globally, there are about 300 000 new cases of thyroid cancer annually, with about 40 000 of those patients actually dying from the disease. (1)
Thyroid cancer starts in the thyroid gland, which is a small butterfly-shaped gland in the front of the neck. Thyroid cancer can occur in both men and women. The most important risk factor for developing thyroid cancer is radiation exposure to the thyroid gland. Other factors that increase the risk of developing thyroid cancer include: benign thyroid conditions; family history of thyroid cancer or inherited conditions. (2)
