The Team Behind The Scene

The Canadian Cancer Survivor Network is working with a strong team of volunteers and staff to ensure the complete success of the Science of Cancer Patient Training Program.  The groups involved withScience of Cancer project include a Curriculum Committee, a Medical Advisory Committee, Subject Matter Experts, and Patient Reviewers.

Curriculum Committee

The Canadian Cancer Survivor Network Curriculum Committee is responsible for developing and reviewing modules, performing evaluations, finding improvements, and acting as a responsive committee prepared to undertake the training program. The Curriculum Committee is similarly responsible for working closely with patient reviewers to receive feedback on the modules, as well as the Medical Advisory Committee and Subject Matter Experts who provide crucial scientific expertise. The Curriculum Committee acts as a central committee (works with all other groups) for the development of the Science of Cancer Training Program.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Developing and reviewing the curriculum
  • Address feedback and potential improvements
  • Collecting information from different credible scientific sources to be used in the modules
  • Assisting project evaluator to perform project evaluations

The Medical Advisory Committee for the Science of Cancer Training Program is composed of Canadian specialists with an interest in the field of cancer, responsible for providing expert advice. Subject Matter Experts

The Subject Matter Experts of the Science of Cancer Patient Training Program are composed of a series of cancer scientists, researchers, oncologists, and organizations that are responsible for writing the content of each module. As the Subject Matter Experts are responsible for content they are experts in, they are responsible for relaying their information to the Curriculum and Medical Advisory Committee who then implement the content in the module. The Subject Matter Experts are also responsible for working with the design team through the production of the modules. Upcoming topics include altered signaling and tumorigenesis, epidemiology, screening, observational studies, drug design pipeline, immunotherapy, clinical trials and bias in research and evaluating scientific evidence.

Role and responsibilities:

  • Provide subject matter expertise to the Canadian Cancer Survivor Network committees
  • Provide oversight on subject information
  • Suggest topics for the modules in the e-learning program

Patient Reviewers

As a part of the Canadian Cancer Survivor Network’s mandate to increase the number of cancer patients, survivors and caregivers who participate in the activities of CCSN Science of Cancer Training Program, we have invited patients to join a new CCSN volunteer team (patient reviewer committee). Patient Reviewers are responsible for going through draft (in-complete) modules and provide feedback on the content and the platform.

Role and responsibilities:

  • Review and provide feedback for the modules
  • Address concerns with the modules that make them inaccessible to cancer patients (includes confusing topics, non-layman wording etc.)
  • Participate in focus group meetings with other committees and patients
  • Receive training and act of healthcare committee and advisory councils
